HEALTHGRADES

Problem: The Healthrades app functions like a Yelp for doctors, but business goals include a holistic approach to user wellness.

Goal: Use the app to foster an ongoing, trusted relationship between the user and the company

Solution: By leveraging the company’s data and partnerships, we were able to create a memorable and functional user experience for the app.

Our task was to increase Healthgrades users' engagement with the app. We were charged with redesigning the existing app's functionality so that it would foster an ongoing, trusted relationship between the user and the company. Prior to our involvement, the Healthgrades app was essentially a directory of healthcare specialists that mirrored information from desktop site, so we were tasked with leveraging the company’s data and partnerships to create a memorable and functional user experience for the app.

OUR DESIGN STORY

My role in this project was managing the UX, Business Strategy, and Content responsibilities. I was in charge of ensuring our designs were meeting Healthgrades’ business goals, and I had to balance that priority with the results of my user interviews. I also was tasked with writing and developing much of the contents on pages and slides. My project management skills were put to the test on this project, and I worked collaboratively throughout the entire user research process.

Business Goal: To develop a platform that streamlines the health and wellness portion of a consumer’s life, while simultaneously building trust and confidence in the Healthgrades brand.

USER INSIGHTS AND INTERVIEW THEMES

  • Wanting help managing stress, but not knowing where to start

  • Requests for access to mental health resources via telehealth

  • Printing family's health records; struggle to get immunization records from pediatrician during business hours to secure daycare spot

  • Hopes for one health portal for self, kids, partner, parents.

  • Desire for data-based system that anticipates user needs:

"I would love if I could manage documents online - meaning both health records and filling out patient forms before the appointment to speed things along. I would love an app that would tell me: 'You’re turning 30 this year - here’s what’s new,' or, 'you’re turning 40 next week - here’s how health guidelines change' or 'things to think about now that your kid is 6.'

PERSONA

We amalgamated our interview findings into a representation of our ideal user to ensure we were guided by intentional, user-centered, and unbiased design decisions:

OUR SOLUTIONS

Based on what our interview subjects were asking for. we brainstormed ideas that could solve the most common problems, and during a workshop with the Healthgrades design team, we narrowed that list down to the following items.

  • Personal Health Record (PHR) system integration through an API

  • Refill prescriptions or be reminded

  • Choose prescription delivery

  • Transparent cost and billing data

  • Reminders for appointments, prescriptions

  • Integrating wearables that detect stress, blood pressure, heart attack, etc. and warn you/others if needed

  • Recommended readings & resources

  • Free instructional yoga videos or links to YouTube channels

  • Mindfulness exercises

  • Community resources

  • Partnership opportunities
